John Scott

John’s paintings are a contemplation, a meditation, and they depict an amazing technical discipline of mastering the fine art of painting.

“In a universe of constant flux and change, I see my role as an artist as one of exploring the intimate relationships between humans and the environment” John says.

John Scott has an innovative take on the landscape, incorporating rich layers of imagery, stories and beliefs in graphic painterly form to create multiple poetic, philosophic and visual meanings to fascinating effect.

Responsive to the Gaia theory which considers the whole planet earth as a biosphere, and hence as a living organism, his paintings pay tribute to the interconnection  of human beings, animals, plant life and the elements by drawing on both the micro and macro cosmic order, internal and external – where science and mythologies meet and merge.

The artist wants you to associate, to recognise, to sort it out for oneself. His work is not a copied representation of subject, but usually a symbolic representation. John’s paintings are a contemplation, a meditation, and they depict an amazing technical discipline of mastering the fine art of painting.

“In a universe of constant flux and change, I see my role as an artist as one of exploring the intimate relationships between humans and the environment, encompassing a broad spectrum of subject matter, and then confronting the prevailing ‘belief’ systems, and in so doing triggering awareness in both the viewer and myself,’ John says.

Born in Sydney in 1961, John began as a classical realist specialising in large accurate portrayals of Sydney Harbour before undergoing a massive spiritual transformation which laid bare the fresh pictorial quest of the artist as visionary biographer with paint brush in hand and oil coursing in the veins. A trained graphic designer, he worked as a freelance illustrator in advertising and with the Sydney Morning Herald, has completed a number of corporate commissions and has work in many private and public collections nationally and internationally.
