Acrylic on Canvas, Image size 103 x 137cm

‘This work is part of a series on Theodora, the Empress of the Byzantine Empire.  Theodora was married to Justinian 1st.  She was born 500 AD and died 548 AD.  Born in Syria, she rose from a life as a whore to become the most powerful woman in Byzantium.  One of her occupations was to be a circus performer, part of her outrageous stage act was to allow birds to eat seeds from her labia.  Her life story is recorded and documented by Procopius.  Procopius was the principal historian for the Byzantine period.  His writings on Empress Theodora were not flattering.  Her story ignited my imagination to create a series about her.’
