Peter Smales – the Impressionist

“The general flow of painting is introspective in so far as my work is a reflection of the things I’ve seen and been visually interested in. In truth, anything has the potential to look interesting as a visual statement but then squeezing that into the format of paint and its potentialities and vagaries is the challenge.

I don’t set off in search of subjects – things suggest themselves. The arrival earlier in the year of the sailing ship: James Craig at Williamstown is a point in case – as a mode of travel it would not be my preferred one, but the boat’s general aesthetic, graceful lines and structure automatically makes me reach for the brushes. So the Covid year has not really impeded my work, just kept me finding subjects closer to home. For this first ‘online-only’ exhibition which unfortunately seems to be the way of the marketing future I have new pieces and have had an opportunity to revisit works either not seen, or not seen for a long time.

The quest is, as always to paint more succinctly and directly. Viewing a painting should be like reading a good book – good prose – elegant passages and something to think about.”
